3 Ways Plastic Manufacturing Will Change in the Near Future

The plastic manufacturing industry has been an infrastructural giant since the compound was first invented. Able to take the shape of whatever item you need and durable enough to withstand years of abuse, plastics play a part in the creation of most products. However, as we’ve learned more from the consumption of plastic-based products, it becomes increasingly clear that changes must occur within the industry itself. Here are three ways plastic manufacturing will change in the near future and why these adjustments are so important for our planet and society.

Replacing Standard Plastic With PLA

One of the first changes we can expect to see in coming years is the switch from using standard plastics to PLA, or polylactic acid. While this compound behaves similarly to plastic, it comes with a series of additional benefits; namely, its biodegradable nature. Used widely in the 3D printing industry, this material makes very durable and flexible products. But over long-term exposure to the elements, it does eventually melt back into its base ingredients.

One downside to this plan is that PLA has a lower melting point, making it unsuitable for higher-temperature applications. This concept requires further research before applying it to large-scale manufacturing.

The Development of Biodegradable Polymers

To reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment, we also expect to see the creation of additional biodegradable plastic alternatives. In fact, there are several different types of these materials currently in development. Some groups use entirely natural ingredients to ensure a harmless degradation process at the end of a product’s life cycle. Other products are partly bio-based with minute traces of synthetic materials to increase the plastic’s strength.

Better Allocation of Resources

Another way plastic manufacturing will change in the near future is in the demand for certain types of plastic products. With new initiatives to reduce the consumption of one-time-use plastic products, it’s time for businesses to reconsider how they use this resource. Rather than manufacturing plastic water bottles and grocery bags, there are many opportunities to start developing reusable or longer-lasting items instead. This is a more sustainable use for these polymers, and it also helps better accommodate the demands of a more eco-conscious market.
